More Than Just Photos: Holding Space & letting moments unfold. Telling your story in photographs.

Updated: 5 days ago

A photographer's job is much more than pointing a camera and pressing a button. It’s about presence, patience, and understanding. As a photographer, especially one working with new parents, families and children, I’ve come to realise that one of the most important things I can do when taking photographs is to simply hold space.

To hold space means to create a safe, calm environment where my clients feel seen, accepted, and supported — without pressure or judgment. It means giving them the time they need to relax, to express themselves, and just be. This is where real connection happens. This is where the most honest, beautiful photographs are made. Slowing down, listening. Noticing the little things. It means understanding that every person brings their own story, emotions, and energy to a session. And all of that deserves to be met with kindness.

How I hold space during photoshoots.

Holding space can look different for every person I work with, but there are some quiet consistencies in how I approach each shoot:

  • I give children time to settle, without pressure to “perform” for the camera.

  • I respond to emotion with gentleness — whether it’s giggles, tears, or silence.

  • I adapt to the energy of the moment, allowing space for pauses and natural connection.

  • I offer guidance when needed, but always with warmth, patience, and kindness.

Sometimes it means stepping back and letting a moment unfold. These are the moments where empathy matters most — and where photography becomes something much deeper than just a picture.

Why it matters.

When people feel safe, seen, and supported, the photographs naturally become more authentic. There’s no need to force a smile — real emotion rises on its own. A glance between siblings, a comforting hug, a quiet moment of reflection — these are the images that stay with us.

For some people, the experience of being photographed can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Holding space allows me to gently guide them through the process with empathy, making sure they feel confident, cared for, and never rushed.

This approach isn’t just something I do — it’s one of the core values of my business.

  • Helping people feel truly seen and valued.

  • Leading to real emotion, not forced smiles.

  • Building trust.

  • Reflecting a deeper intention.

You don’t have to be anything but yourself...

If you're thinking of booking a session but feel nervous, camera-shy, or unsure of what to expect — know this:

If you feel like you're not perfect - let me remind you that you are.

You don’t need to know what to do. You just need to be you — and I’ll take care of the rest.

Listening Deeply - What matters to you.

Truly hearing what my clients share — their hopes, their hesitations, their story — is one of the greatest acts of understanding I can offer.

I listen, not just to respond, but to understand.

At the heart of it all is a quiet intention:

  • To hold space.

  • To honour story.

  • To reflect what matters most.

I’ll hold the space. You show up as you are. And together, we’ll create something real.

As always, thanks for stopping by,

Nic x
